A lot can happen in a year. For Blank Tapes, the past 365 days have seen 44 interviews with local NC artists, 81 total articles, and a state-wide Artist Directory nearly 400 acts strong. Our team has grown from a solo effort to a handful of passionate music fans across the Piedmont. There are even a dozen “officially branded” T-shirts out in the wild. How cool is that?!
And today, the cherry on top releases in the form of Mountains to Sea Vol. 1, a benefit compilation for Western North Carolina.
It has been a months-long effort from the initial idea and outreach to gathering songs and getting cassettes made. Now, it’s a tangible product that you can hold in your hands (or just listen to digitally, if you prefer).
With the anniversary of Hurricane Helene on September 27, it was a no-brainer to prioritize support for our western neighbors through this project. All funds raised through compilation sales are going directly to the Community Foundation of Western NC, as they help folks recover from the deadliest hurricane in our state’s history.

As orders are rolling out, it’s almost easy to forget that we’ve got another year of local music journalism ahead! More interviews in the works and even a new article format to debut in a few weeks. The quest to cover the vast talent in our big, weird state never ends.
We’re also gearing up for a benefit show on October 25th from 3-7pm at Yonderlust Cafe in Durham. All proceeds are going to support Frog Hollow Outdoors after Tropical Storm Chantal ruined their summer season. It’s shaping up to be a fun, family-friendly afternoon of live music from The Wigg Report, Chicken Ranch Road Show, Ol’ Joey Scrums, Eugenius, Ravary, and saturn is changing.
